In this slasher from 1997, a group of teenagers accidentally run someone over, and deliberately dump his body in the sea. Didn’t they have police in the ’90s? Certainly not fashion police, judging by some of Jennifer Love Hewitt’s outfits.
I Know What You Did Last Summer opens with the urban legend of The Hook, before delivering its own morality tale. Except it’s not a morality tale. It’s hard to discuss this without spoilers, so let’s just say that the film’s twist negates its only potentially interesting aspect – its moral dimension – and lets its awful characters off the hook (sorry).
So what are we left with? Another slasher-by-numbers, which makes one look back on The House on Sorority Row with relative fondness. It’s written by Scream scribe Kevin Williamson, but contains none of the epochal slasher’s edge or wit; just implausible trash and an evil fisherman. It does display a modicum of self-awareness, but not enough to apologise for wasting everyone’s time.
On the plus side, it features scream queen extraordinaire Sarah Michelle Gellar, a song by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and the dashed dreams of dreadful teens. But save yourself the trouble of another lazy, clumsy slasher, and watch The Simpsons‘ version instead: I Know What You Diddily–Iddily–Did (Treehouse of Horror X). It’s infinitely better… diddly.
