Australia’s second most famous drag queen and joint sexiest vegan is touring the UK following her Celebrity Big Brother victory earlier this year. Under the Covers sees Courtney Act sing a variety of songs and talk about life, gender fluidity and Ann Widdecombe.
Courtney first shot to fame on Australian Idol, conquered America by reaching the final three of Rupaul’s Drag Race and has now reached beyond LGBT audiences in the UK through her Big Brother appearance. Where next? She jokingly suggests Strictly, but as a successful wig entrepreneur on the side, maybe The Apprentice is more likely.
It goes without saying that she’s a great singer. It’s a rarity for a drag queen to be able to sing like a woman, but Courtney can pull this off with her tremendous vocal range. Highlights include Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You and a duet of If I Were A Boy/Girls Just Wanna Have Fun with her boy self, Shane Janek, onscreen behind her.
A famous vegan and advocate of animal rights, her act features a song about veganism to rival Macka B’s Wha Me Eat, to the tune of Michael Jackson’s Beat It. And all this is accompanied by dazzling costumes, invoking glamorous divas from Olivia Newton John to Kylie Minogue.
Introduced by Big Brother narrator Marcus Bentley, with an audio cameo from Rupaul’s Drag Race winner Bianca del Rio, her reality TV pedigree is displayed with pride. But while Courtney is without doubt a reality TV whore, she has the talent and intellect to back it up, making her worth seeing whether you’re familiar with her past appearances or not.
