Rocky goes to the Rockies in this 1993 mountaineering actioner starring Sylvester Stallone.

When a group of incompetent criminals steal three suitcases full of cash, which were being transported from a place to another place for some reason, it’s up to Sly and his mountain rescue team to stop them in a dizzying series of aerial set-pieces; Rambo on Ice.

Renny Harlin, who directed A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, brings the same combination of nonsense plot and cheesy kiss-off lines, with giddying results. It may be as mad as Jackie Stallone, but Cliffhanger mounts grizzly action and some hilarious quotes.

“Gravity’s a bitch, ain’t it?” It’s that film; the old school of action cinema, where salt-of-the-earth muscle-men thwart the effeminate and/or foreign villains, enjoyably played here by John Lithgow, chewing up the scenery – and there’s a lot of it to chew. Stallone himself is physically great but verbally… not so much. Also featured are Michael Rooker, a rabbit and this guy:

Cliffhanger never scales the extreme heights of Point Break, but remains a thoroughly entertaining action movie to enjoy on a Saturday night – unless you’re acrophobic or on the verge of an important medical breakthrough, in which case you probably shouldn’t get distracted.
