Tom Waits, Liam Neeson and Tim Blake Nelson (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) star in this Western anthology about American mythology.
Spurred on perhaps by the episodic nature of Hail, Caesar!, the Coen brothers bring more depth to these six stories, which also feature some of the most beautifully composed shots of the year. The chapters are varied in style but the film feels cohesive, bookended by songs and tied together by the Coens’ fascination with death and their uncanny sense of irony.
Oscillating gently between funny, sad and dark, the stories range from witty cowboy action to twisted folk tales, each demonstrating masterful storytelling and glowing performances from the esteemed ensemble. Rich with emotion and Western subversion, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs finds the Coens huddled round the campfire doing what they do best: finding warmth in the darkness.
