In Sam Raimi’s latest production, Kaya Scodelario (Effy from Skins) and Barry Pepper (Jonnie Goodboy Tyler from Battlefield Earth) are trapped in a flooded basement with a pair of alligators blocking their escape. It’s like Taylor Swift said: gators gonna gate gate gate gate gate.
From the producer of Don’t Breathe comes another film about not breathing (his next one is rumoured to be about a festival toilet), only this time it’s a bog-standard shark attack movie in all but species. The script is bumpier than the alligators and the CGI is a crock, while a subplot about the dad missing all his daughter’s swimming galas belongs in a completely different film.
Named after the stroke (that the characters appear to have suffered), Crawl feels more sustained than The Meg but Alexandre Aja’s (Switchblade Romance) claustrophobic direction is buried among stock characters and iffy work from Effy. At the end of the day if you want to watch a gator attack movie then this is probably fine, which is more than can be said for you.
